Madurai Wisdom: Do not be materialistic - to be happy!

Do not be materialistic - To be Happy!

this is something every saint has been telling, including Buddha, Jesus, Krishna -
everyone.

Main cause of any problem is due to attachment. Being materialistic is a subset of "being attached", because there will be more things involved when we say "being attached".

If we avoid being materialistic, we can be more happy in life, in a permanent manner!
It is very simply said, but not done!

It is again a choice of things. It is about a small decision you take in various
situations. When there is a time, when you have to decide which one you want - humman or a material. Choose human!

If some action is going to hurt a human or a material. Avoid hurting human.

As someone said it nicely - "If you want to be happy, love people and use things, instead of loving things and using people".

If we just follow this, we should be really happy in life!!

Happy being non-materialistic!!:-)

Madurai Wisdom: Giving back to the family and society

Giving back to the family and society

Every man should give back to the family and his society.
If your mother and father are suffering from some difficulty in their olden days and you don't help them or even care for it, you are eligible for a punishment. Yes, that is a SIN.

Even a single drop of tear from your mother's eyes will not let you live properly later in your life.

Whatever happens, do not leave your father and mother behind.
If you want to live happily and get moksha, it is good to have your parents happy as well!!

I think I have talked about giving back to society quite a bit and moreoever it will be covered in other articles later.

Remembering Madurai - Compound house

Today I live in one bed room house, which has a hall, bedroom, kitchen, dining hall, restroom, balcony etc., in a liesure manner. When I think back, when I was in school days...

We were a middle class family, living in a small house, which had one room and one kitchen. That belonged to a "compound house". The compound house has five such small "houses". we lived in one of them, which is in the end of the compound.

These kind of houses are of totally different kind. No privacy would be there. Whatever you do, neighbour knows. Even if we don't tell, the neighbour will ask about it. Any guests come, whole street and compound people will know.

I guess my parents might have given Rs.100 to Rs.250 as rent on those days!

When we get inside the home, the first small "space", not room - is the kitchen, where some cooking happens on the floor. we used to have food, by sitting on the floor, just near the stove. If we have made it to gas stove, then we are richest. If you had a kerosene stove, you are richer. if you have the mud stove, which burns with the woods, then you are OK and slightly poor.

Need to explain another space in the small house. This is used as a living room, study room, also bed room and everything is done here. We were three boys, no sisters and my father and mother. In fact, in that small space we had a cot as well. One of us sleep on the cot and all others will sleep on the floor with our legs under the cot!!

In fact, there was ONE common restroom for all the 5 houses(spaces) out there!

We are living a luxurious life today!! All this luxury is all given by my mother and father, by their lot of hard work and sweat! They have worked hard to give us good and quality education and quality food and knowledge!

thank you amma and appa!! I will owe you a lot anytime in my life! Naan ungallukku romba kadamappatturukkaen...

To be continued...

Safe Retirement Hint!

In order to be safe in our retirement period and live cooly - it is better to have an income which is equivalent to the pre-retirement time. At the basic - 75% of the current income is a good amount for a retirement income every month. But, here is an advice from an expert in this field -

If you want a 90 percent chance of having adequate retirement income, you should save 26 percent of your income every year.

Clean and Green Madurai

Clean and Green Madurai is one of the key things which will facilitate our tourism. Again there are three tasks. Slight relation with KAIZEN. First - Clean the whole Madurai. Second - Maintain the clean and green madurai. Third - Bringing in new improvements and procedures(probably LAW) for proactively clean New Madurai, rather than reactive solution. Bring in the student population and use their time effectively, for cleaning whole of Madurai. If we have to take up the reactive solution, maintenance is going to be tough and costly. If we put the rules and laws across, then we don't need to spend time and money on maintenance. Give options for bigshots, businessmen for adopting certain areas for improvement. Calling 555 for cleaner Madurai enforcement force.

Individual Madurai's responsibility

If every citizen has the following idea in mind in order to take the responsibility, we have the synergy to accomplish the task. Feel that whole Madurai is one entity. It is all team work doing various tasks, but the goal is same. Every citizen should feel that first of all individual task has to be performed for individual improvement, next comes family, next comes his relatives improvement, next comes community, next comes the street improvement, next comes improvement of section of madurai, next comes whole city improvement. If everybody realizes this basic idea, we are on right track.

Madurai to New Madurai - High Level Action Items and Tasks

There are three main tasks to be carried out. One is solving the existing problems, next is improvement of the solved Madurai, next is taking Madurai to a world class place. Time period for creation of New Madurai will take a lifetime. Before 2030. This is going to be Vision 2030.

Unused potential productive population in any country

There are two categories of people who can be made productive in the society in order for our improvement in revenue for the city. They are: Majority of women and college students. In addition to this category, there are certain lazy category of men, who are not productive. Every person is responsible for the improvement of himself, his family and the society of Madurai and in turn for the country. While designing the improvement of industrialization, we should include a percentage of employees as the above category of people.

Labels: ,

Madurai Agriculture

Since Agriculture is one of the prime activities, we got to make that as a business, which will be a win-win situation. First of all, the farmers have to be made self-sufficient, since they are the main building blocks of the agriculture business. If we are not able to provide a good lifestyle for a farmer, then the city is still backward.

Labels:

Madurai into New Madurai

Solution is very simple, in order to make Madurai as New Madurai. Let me explain very clearly. As basic roots, every citizen of Madurai should get the basic things for life - Food, Shelter, Clothing. In order for everybody to get these basic things, they should have a job. Everybody should have a job. If everybody is given proper education and if we are able to bring literacy rate to 100% and sow the entrepreneural seeds, then industrialization and more business should happen in Madurai, which will lead to more jobs, and then eventually decent lifestyle for every citizen with 3 times food per day.

Labels:

Madurai - Law and Order

Madurai Law and Order:

There should not be any rowdies. There are two problems here. One is corruption and another is not enough police force to control them. If we are able to make 1 police constable for 100 persons, we should be good. If there is any crime, increase the punishment and make it effective, without any exemption. Here if we handle corruption and increase punishment and increase the police force, then law and order will be under control. If we have to increase the police force, we have to have much finance to feed them. That actually comes from increase in entrepreneurship/industrialization of Madurai, which will provide more revenue inputs to the city.

Labels:

Don't give birth - if you will not be able to afford!

Why would a family give birth to more than two children(at the minumum), when they will not be able to afford financially to bring up the family. It is really crazy. This happens mainly in third world countries only. Apparently it happens in Madurai too. The main reason for this problem is illiteracy. If the family head has some common sense, if not basic education, he should not give birth to children, whom he will not be able to take care. This is a shame of the family head. Do not give birth to children if you will not be able to afford to bring them up.

Angry Madurai Machan!!

Labels:

Sathunavu thittam - free meals

Sathunavu thittam was one of the best schemes our past leaders have implemented. It has be commended very much. The reason is this particular scheme solves both literacy and also food issue. The reason poor people are not sending the children to school is that they don't have money for their food. So they send their children to work. In order to make the parents rethink about sending their children to school, Dr.MGR have put across this scheme, which gives the children food and also education. The solution is a very simple one, but it is just brilliant. Kudos to Dr.MGR.

Recently Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha came up with meals in temple - well, I am NOT completely FOR it! but there might be different perspectives to it, because some say - it is good. This might lead for unemployed and lazy youths to just stay lazy! We need to leave the people and youngsters to work hard for their food! We should not just provide food to people without work!!

There is no such thing as free meals in this world - This is what every country has to follow - Don't give free food, unless somebody is totally disabled!!

Remembering My Great Madurai - A special report from Madurai Machan! - Part I

Considering the fact that this article is a 400th article in Made in Madurai, I am writing this special article remembering madurai.

Dear Madurai,
I LOVE YOU my dear Madurai. I love you so much that no one can measure. I was born and did my schooling in Madurai. I just feel at home. No Hassles and No problem. Always had fun in Madurai. In fact some calm times are in Madurai only.

You are a perfect blend of rural emotions and urban facilities. People who live in Madurai enjoy both the advantages of rural and urban combinations. You can see whole lot of Rural floating population and also settled Urban population.

This article will manifest my love towards Madurai and also my dreams for Madurai.
I cannot make Madurai as New York, but I can make Madurai as another New Madurai, which is better than New York. This is my dream for my Madurai.

I want to call it "Pudhiya Madurai".
Kanavu Kandaen Naan Kanavu kandaen.
Yen Pudhiya Madurai Uruvaaga Kanavu Kandaen...Naan..
Kanavu Kandaen Naan Kanavu Kandaen..

This is a song written by me. But this dream has to be made to reality. That is what I will work towards.

I want to bring everything world class in Madurai. You might think why should I work on Madurai to get things straightened. Yes. I am thinking globally, acting locally, which I think is a success formula. Seeing the changes I make in Madurai, that exemplify for other cities over the country.

The areas which we will have to concentrate on:
1. Education to reach all and walking towards 100% Literacy in Madurai.
2. Every citizen in Madurai should get full meals three times a day.
3. Employment for every citizen. Walking towards 100% employment in Madurai.
4. Sow Entrepreneur seeds and make banyan trees out of this activity.
5. Clean and Green Madurai
6. Clean and Organized Traffic
7. People's Attitute towards Life
8. Improve Technology and Business in Madurai to lead towards a wealthier city.
9. Concentrate on Food, Clothing and Education.
10. Every Madurai citizen should get the basic thing and everything should be affordable to everybody.
11. Abolish child labour
12. Introduce a single number to track and help all of the population.
13. e-Governance
14. Population control
15.Sow Entrepreneurship in everyone's mind
16.Reduce tax rate
17.Abolish Corruption
18.Legalize abortion
19. Make it a best welfare city. Improve the income of the government by more and more industries, which in turn will create jobs.
20. Promote Small savings
21. Promote Tourism, which will be the highest revenue generating business for the city
22. Start a Mayor relief fund
23. Youth welfare and Sports development
24. Health improvement - Hospitals
25. Animal Husbandry
26. Horticulture
27. Agriculture
28. Poultry
29. Madurai District Mil Producers Union Ltd.,
30. Education - Schools, College/Universaties - UG, PG, PhD.
31. Fisheries
32. Handlooms and Textiles
33. Health and Family Welfare
34. Industries
35. Kallar reclamation
36. Revenue
37. Social Welfare
38. Tamil Nadu Electricity Board
39. Tourism
40. Transport
41. TWAD

People might think I am crazy, but probably I am. Why am I worrying only about Madurai - shouldn't I be concerned about all about India or all about mankind? You are right! But, my approach is - if we are able to make some positive change in Madurai, which is a small city in India and it is a part of India - automatically this positive change will spread across India and across the world. This is my opinion and I believe in this chain reaction.

In my life time, I can only work on something small and I want to achieve that. I don't want to take up a task in my life, which I will not be able to achieve it. I want to take up something which is challenging and at the same time achievable!! That is why Madurai!!! Moreover, I love Madurai!!!

Well, I have not talked yet about "remembering madurai". I have to talk more about Madurai in terms of what I remember!:-) in the following part II!!

SWAMI VIVEKANANDA BOOK BANK

Following is a mail from HelpingMinds Group - a Non-profit group for a good cause. They are referring to "SWAMI VIVEKANANDA BOOK BANK", who need books for their book bank. Please read on...

Moreover - there is no relation between Swami Vivekananda Book Bank and New Madurai Foundation. I received this mail through Helping Hands Group with great hearts!

Hi,

We need the following Engg books for our book bank to help some underprivileged students. If you or your friends have any of the following books, pls contact anyone of us (in the “cc” - ravi.ramasamy@cognizant.com, suresh.jayaraj@cognizant.com, a.tamilvanan@tcs.com ) or call us at the earliest (9894412884, 9840723394, 23750433).

BOOK

1 System software by L.Beck
2 Electronic circuits by Bakshi
3 Object oriented programming with C++ by Balagurusamy
4 Digital principles & System design by A.P.Godse & D.A.Godse
5 Electrical & Electronics Engg by Nagrath & Kothari
6 Discrete Mathematics by Balaji
7 Theory of Computation
8 Data communication & networks by Forouzan
9 Database system concept by Silberschatz.K,Sudharsan

For those who don’t know abt us:
We are running “SWAMI VIVEKANANDA BOOK BANK”, with the prime objective of lending a helping hand to deserving and underprivileged Engg students. This semester we were able to help 14 Engg students and looking forward to help 5 more students. We identified the students with the help of few govt.school H.Ms and friends’ circle. Our principle is very simple – “serving only the deserving”.

Just a summary of book bank processing:

* Issue of appln forms to the students. The students have to mention the contact of a reference (School principal/ neighbour) by means of whom he/she came to know abt our book bank.
* The forms should be filled in with all the details of the student and it should be attested by dept.H.O.D.
* Address proof & income proof should also be produced along with completed appln. Forms.
* Elimination of students who don’t fit into our scheme of things
* Issue of books to the deserving students.

For any query/clarification, pls write back

Regards,

R.Ravi (+91 9894412884).

Cool Email Signature

There are various cool signatures, I have been seeing. I would like to list here two of them, which I liked most!

1. How am I doing? Please email my managers abc@xyz.com or def@xyz.com!
2. Every morning I see the Forbes 40 List of Billionaires and if my name is not there, I go to work!!

Aren't they cool signatures? Yes, I like them!!

What do we infer from these two signatures? Here are my thoughts -
1. First one is a very responsible signature. It shows responsibility of the person. It shows the way he/she is sure that he will do the right thing in work. He/she is not afraid of anything. He is bold enough and quite sure that he will do the duty perfectly. Also he wants it to be notified to the managers. This email signature can be added to the company email.

2. Second one is a really cool one. It shows that the person is a fun loving person. Also, he wants to become a rich person, but not sure how to achieve that. But definitely looks like a person who would want to do the work perfectly. This email signature can be added to your personal email.

Thank You!

Two choices in the morning!

Everyday, we have two choices in the morning.
Either to be happy or not happy!
Either to be enthusiastic or dull!
Either to be active or inactive!
Either to be with a smiling or angry and irritated on everyone!

Why take negative option, while we have an option of picking a positive one!?
It is easier to ask, rather to practice.
We don't realize this decision making point, when we are at that point.

We need to realize this and make the decision appropriately and control our mind appropriately. Direct the mind accordingly to take the positive option - to be happy!!

Hope you agree to this!?!

Plan Ahead - Daily Planner - Hand Journal

I bought a planner handbook last month and I am using the planner for quite a month and I am very happy and satisfied about that.

This PlanAhead planner contains diary, which has a sufficient space for every day activities and I can write down my ToDos in the diary. I mark some appointments and tasks well ahead and be prepared and make every day successful.

Also there is a notepad attached to it, using that I can write down notes and my thoughts then and there, whenever I want.

Some folders are also there, so I keep some important documents or printouts or maps in that folder.

This is bound with a black leather and I keep a pen with it.

I definitely see some difference in life by managing effectively and planning ahead and have better control over the personal and work related tasks.

I bought this in Walmart. I have seen the same in any book shops in India or any stationary stores. Check out in book shops like Walden etc., so that you have some options to pick it up. It comes in around Rs.500 or 6$-10$ US.

It is definitely worth the money!!

Different stages in life!

As you know and would have read in many scriptures that there are various stages in life for every human being. If you have not read in scriptures, you should have at least seen in TV/movies or read it in some books.

There are various stages in life for every NORMAL human being. Even if we are not fitting to the lifestyle, the society and various other parameters will try to pull you into the lifestyle. You will have to go through this, unless you are escapist/enthusiast and you do different things in different stages of your life.

In the childhood days, need to play.
In the school days, need to study.
In the college days, need to study and have fun - love!! - for a modern trend!
In the working days, need to learn at work and earn
In the married days, need to spend time with family and keep earning and saving for the future of the children.
In the later stages, need to donate and live the money you saved.
In the much later stages, go places and pray god rigorously and also be sure to live life!!

If we don't do the right things at right time, we will repent later for not doing what we have not done. Well, this is not a forward. Composed it myself!!

Time consciousness matters!!

For any project to be successful, all of the team members have to remember few important things. The important things includes - time, cost and effort.

In order to have control over the cost of the project and working within the budget, we need to be cost conscious. In order to be profitable, if we utilize lesser money resources, it is good. There is more chance of being profitable, if we are cost conscious.

At the same time, we need to be time conscious for being effective and efficient in executing any project. If we have to complete a task within a particular time we need to make sure it is completed well ahead of the deadline or on time. It makes us lazy if we postpone things and procrastinate. We won't be able to get things done sooner.

A month project can be prolonged to a year project, if time factor is not under control. Determination drives most of the time consciousness.

If we are not determined to succeed in life and work, then we won't feel like being time conscious and we will try to push time!

It is good to be time conscious. When something is good, why to leave it! Take the habit of time consciousness and live with it.

Good to have immigrants in USA

I went to SSA(Social Security Administration Office) this morning with my friend for his work. I was reading through the manuals lying out there for everyone's understanding.

I was reading basics about Social Security. As you all know, Social Security System is mainly for retirement, but not just that it is more than that. The youngsters today will work for today's elderly people's pension. Today's elderly person had worked for yesterday's elderly person.

In the manuals, I read that 36 million of Americans are above 65+ age as on date. But in 2041, looks like the elderly people will be doubled, because of baby-boom problem. The young people on that day, will not be able to feed as much as these guys had contributed. So elderly people on 2041 will be abundant with less young folks, which is going to be a problem.

My answer for this problem would be - Just get as much non-immigrants possible from outside the country to get them pay the taxes more as on date and anytime. This will make sure at anytime they fill the gap of less youngsters in the country right??!!!

Your comments on the idea??!

Tech Support for fun: Wife 1.0 software

Dear Tech Support:

Last summer I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0. But this
new program has created an unexpected miniature version of itself
which is using up a lot of space and valuable resource. In addition,
Wife 1.0 has installed itself into all my other programs and now
monitors all other system activity such as the applications 'Poker
Night 103','Football 5.0', 'Hunting' and 'Fishing 7.5', and 'Racing
36'. I can't seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while
attempting to run my favorite applications. I'm thinking about going
back to Girlfriend 7.0, but the uninstall doesn't work on Wife 1.0.

Please help!

Thanks, Troubled User..

REPLY:

Dear Troubled User:

This is a very common problem that men complain about.
Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0, thinking
that it is just a Utilities and Entertainment program. Wife 1.0
is an OPERATING SYSTEM and is designed by its Creator to run
EVERYTHING!! ! It is also impossible to delete Wife 1.0 and to
return to Girlfriend 7.0. It is impossible to uninstall, or purge
the program files from the system once installed.

You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is designed
to not allow this. Look in your Wife 1.0 manual under
Warnings-Alimony- Child Support. I recommend that you keep
Wife1.0 and work on improving the situation. I suggest installing the
background application "Yes Dear" to alleviate software augmentation.

The best course of action is to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE
because ultimately you will have to give the APOLOGIZE command
before the system will return to normal anyway. Wife 1.0 is a great
program, but it tends to be very high maintenance. Wife 1.0 comes
with several support programs, such as Clean and Sweep 30, Cook It
1.5 and Do Bills 4.2. However, be very careful how you use these
programs.Improper use will cause the system to launch the program
Nag Nag 9.5 .Once this happens, the only way to improve the
performance of Wife 1.0 is to purchase additional software. I
recommend Flowers 2.1 and Diamonds 5.0 !

WARNING!!! DO NOT, under any circumstances, install Secretary
With Short Skirt 3.3. This application is not supported by Wife
1.0 and will cause irreversible damage to the operating system.

Best of luck,
Tech Support
